Title: Swap gas boiler to electric?
Post by: steved on May 02, 2017, 10:47:22 AM
Hi
Is it possible (and allowed) to swap out old gas boiler in Settlers Court for an electric one?

If yes, can anyone recommend a competent, reliable and cost competitive engineer?

Many thanks.

Hi G-man

Thanks for advising.

Have tried searching with a few key words but no posts turned up.

FYI have recently had some companies round to quote:

* Due to recent legislation about gas flue length/angle, they all advise (for my flat at least) that electric boiler is the only solution.
* Quotes vary from £3.8k to £5.2k which when you consider the boiler as the largest single cost is approx £1k inc vat then the labour element appears extortionate for 3 days work!
* Other materials would be no more than another £1k at worst, leaving approx £2k labour for the week, roughly equivalent to £100k per year salary. What the hell? Pure greed!

Rob Dent has done many boiler replacements on the estate, give him a call, he may have already done one in a property with the same layout as yours.

Hi, Keston boilers will do the job also, they are gas and will comply with regs.  So its should be a swap out rather than new fit out.

Update:
Advertised the job on www.mybuilder.com. Very efficient site and easy to use. Highly recommend. 5 tradesmen replied wanting to quote. I chose 3 based on their customers reviews.
2 turned up to quote. 1 didn't turn up and never answered my texts.
1 of the 2 quotes was very basic, headline price no details.
The other quote was brilliantly detailed with breakdowns of materials, labour and VAT. Also discussed the difficulty of flues in much detail.
I chose him for the detail and very competitive quote £2.2k incl vat for a new gas boiler. (Electric was £3k and higher running costs).
He starts on 21st June.

New boiler is working well and should save some money as only paying for the hot water used rather than storing it in a cylinder.
A little disappointed in the fitter though as he strongly complained to me about my attempt to negotiate on price! Has anyone ever seen a poor heating engineer?
A cold tap in en-suite started dripping continuously immediately after the job was completed. The fitter advised me that the increased pressure from the boiler caused this. I still have doubts!
After giving him 6 dates to return to fix it, which he ignored, I have had to give up and am now looking for a plumber to change a tap for me as it is in a very difficult place under the sink.
