Growing a bit tired of living were we do, with our pathetic internet speeds!! ::)
I'm looking to "buy some bandwidth" from at least 2 interested parties who are close to Studley Court. Ideally, we have a non-intrusive arrangement ;D whereby access is over the air via wireless. Access is ONLY required Fri - Sun for approximately 5-6 hours per day at times to be mutually agreed.
In return, I will pay a fee towards the broadband rental. We both gain - you get very cheap internet and I get the extra bandwidth I require. I am also willing to sign an agreement.
Why? I need extra bandwidth to upload large files to a server as part of my work. Currently, the process is painfully slow due to the poor speeds we get here. And I like working from home! 8)
Please drop me a PM if interested.
Thanks.

What upload speed do you currently enjoy/suffer? :)
-
Hi Peter. A third-world equivalent of only 448 (~45kBps). Seriously, I know of people in Zimbabwe with a faster upload speed than this! :(
-
Ya, 48k is pretty bad. Do you know why this is? Who is your ISP?
My speed test just now.....
Speed Test Results
Date 08/04/09 20:21:49
Speed Down 5185.06 Kbps ( 5.1 Mbps )
Speed Up 337.06 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps )
Port 80

It is...wait for it...BT! :o
The downspeed is not too shabby - 3MEG. It's the upload that is killing me.
-
Well, I'm with BT as well. :o There's a case for you to have a proper official moan up and get that sorted. I can't believe that the copper line is much longer for you than it is for me, you might be even closer.
Have you tried a different router?

Im in Studley to, I'm with AOL(gold) and my down speed rarely goes above 0.9 Mbps.
The classic line i was given is that becuase I use AVG, its not very compatable with AOL - it runs out next month so any ideas who I should change to - is Norton any better?
-
Ricky, you'll be able to 'turn off' your AVG to test this idea. It'll either have a deactivate feature or you can stop it's 'Service' running from your 'Computer Management' applet. This is accessed by right clicking your 'My Computer' icon in the top left of your desktop and choosing 'Manage'. The Services applet is at the bottom.

Cheers, whats the web address to test the download speeds?
-
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html
This is the old ADSL Guide site, it's very useful for tips and info. The test will run for 2 mins, then it'll ask for a little info, just fill it in with junk for the result.
-
Apologies if my figures above are misleading! I have just run a speed test
Download Speed: 2408 kbps (301 KB/sec )
Upload Speed: 371 kbps (46.4 KB/sec )
The term "448" is what BT call the line speed.
So I need another line to double that up. Currently, uploading a 1GB file takes about 6 hours. ggrrrr!
-
Y'won't get upload speeds any faster than that without going to a specialist/business product.
I had a Business package from BT years ago that gave me 25:1 contention ratio, compared to the at least 50:1 contention these days. But even with that the upload speeds weren't great.
You need to do some Broadband shopping, the ADSLGuide.org site will list and compare them all for you.

I just my speed test
I'm on BT line rental and Sky broadband
..in Studley
Date 09/04/09 21:33:10
Speed Down 2535.24 Kbps ( 2.5 Mbps )
Speed Up 339.07 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps )
-
So, after complaining about slow upload speeds, it turns out that Calci has the fastest of all !!! :D :D :D
-
Not an expert but BE internet 'seems' to Promise more.
2.5mb upload
https://www.bethere.co.uk/broadbandpro.do
If that doesnt work suggest a try borrowing a work dongle it may be better on upload upto 1.8mb, try the 02 30 day happiness gtee or similar.
My stats using Virgin via a BT line at midnight
10/04/09 00:10:25
Speed Down 725.96 Kbps ( 0.7 Mbps )
Speed Up 671.03 Kbps ( 0.7 Mbps )
Port 8095

Ah! There is the reason for my advert!! ;D
1. I cannot get a faster provider like O2 or Be There because they are not accepting any new customers due to Poplar exchange being at capacity.
2. SDSL (the business class internet) is also not available to me "due to the distance from the exchange"
3. Installing a new hard line is not an option due to the excessive cost involved in quotes from BT.
So I am stuck with what I have. The upload speed is "standard" but given a choice, I would rather wait 3 hours instead of 6 hours!!
-
Think I must have the worst results !!!! and this is the same even when i turn AVG firewall off!
Speed Test Results

Getting better ! :D

Still no one willing to sign up?? :)

Have you thought about getting together and running a 'VQ-Wide' free public wireless?
-
Yes, what about a VQ Cloud, would that work?
-
I was very tempted to put a proposal together for something along those lines to POM, but decided that it would take a lot of effort to get enough people on board to make it worthwhile. I'm quite surprised that there wasn't any provision for high speed broadband put in place when VQ was built. If people are that interested I might consider looking at this again, but it really depends how receptive POM would be...
