Local Restaurants
« on: May 27, 2011, 08:15:07 AM »
Hi All,

I didn't see a thread on restaurants and being a bit of a foodie (well, I just like to eat), I thought I'd share some of my local faves.  I figured if you want full reviews and locations etc - google is king.  So I've set out the basics and my "personal" reasons for why these are my faves.  I'm hoping others will share their top tips too - would love to try new places. :D

Chinese / Far East Faves

Gourmet San
261 Bethnal Green Road, City of London, Greater London E2 6AH
020 7613 1366
For great ?spicy? Sichuan Chinese food and also non-spicy traditional Chinese options too.  They do deliver to E14.  If you?re eating-in, expect the usual Chinese ?efficient? service.

Cafe East (Canada Water / Surrey Quays)
100 Redriff Road, London SE16 7LH
020 7252 1212
Vietnamese food ? a nice selection of around 30 dishes ? its about quality not variety ? they know what dishes they do best and don?t try to load up the menu with too many options.

China Palace (Excel)
2 Western Gateway, City of London, London E16 1DR
020 7474 0808
Nice place for dim sum ? our regular weekend lunch ?thing? ? for four adults, round 9-10 dishes, it averages about ?10 so quite reasonable.

Italian
Il Bordello
81 Wapping High St, City of London E1W 2YN
020 7481 9950
What can I say ? great food, great service ? the ?old? traditional Italian waiters ? belissima.

Vietnamese - Bien Tay on Kingsland Road, not exactly local local but the best I have found for good Pho.  About ?6-?8 for a meal and BYOB.

Thai/Chinese/Japanese takeaway - Lemongrass kitchen, very fresh compared to other takeaways and good quality

Thai restaurant - Elephant Royal on the river at Island Gardens, you can't beat their red duck curry!  Bit more pricey c.?10 a dish so normally comes out about ?25 a person with starter, main and wine.

We went to the recently opened The Old Fire Station. 463 Westferry Road, Docklands, London, E14 3AN. Tel: (0207 ) 987 4040.

Food very good, great portion size and reasonably priced. We had the lamb shanks for main and the feta & spinach pastries & a grilled halloumi to start.

Thanks MB054 - had a hankering for lamb shanks the other day so will try the old fire station ;)

Sarah8687 - Kingsland Road was a fav spot for Vietnamese - used to go to Song Que but the long queues and the timed tables slowly turned us off - will give Bien Tay!!!

Has anyone heard if "The Gun" pub will fired up the Portuguese BBQ this year?

The Gun is pretty good.  I've been going there since the 80s.  It's good as a place to have a drink and not just to eat in.  Service is really good and views are great.
